The knee high stocking is often overlooked in favor of more practical, prosaic socks, or longer stockings or pantyhose, but it is overlooked to the detriment of the hosiery lover who is missing out on a world of fun, fine hosiery. Knee highs were originally created as a ‘cheats’ way to look as if they were wearing hosiery under a long skirt without having to actually go to all the hassle of wearing full stockings or pantyhose.
I’ve been receiving quite a few emails recently on the topic of incorporating women’s clothing into male attire. Some men ask how to do it, others offer hints and tips, so I am going to do a bit of a series on pieces of female attire you can work into your male wardrobe without anyone being any the wiser. We’ll start with the feet today and look at women’s socks.
This one goes out as a reader request I received via email. As the astute reader noted, patterned tights feel great and can pass as socks on occasion. Thus we have the makings of the perfect cross over hosiery for men, hosiery that feels feminine but which is ambiguous enough to throw clothing gender purists off the scent long enough for one to make good their escape through the briar patch.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but diamond stockings can be a man’s best friend. The image most people have of diamond stockings is a little on the trashy side. They’re also quite often referred to as fence net stockings. However, as with all things in life, how trashy diamond stockings are depends very much on their execution.
Stockings are almost always visions of nylon, but a little lace in the right place can transform an everyday pair of stockings into something truly special. Lace pantyhose and stockings come in two kinds, the kind where lace serves as a trim, and the kind where lace is incorporated into the design of the stocking or pantyhose as a whole. Both styles of lace hosiery have their place in any aficionado’s wardrobe.
For many men, the epitome of feminine leg wear is a simple pair of sensually sheer pantyhose. This may surprise women, who quite often only wear pantyhose because of uniform requirements, or if it is a particularly cold day and all their other stockings have runs in them. For many men who like to wear lingerie however, sheer pantyhose are a potent symbol of femininity, possibly because men have long observed this type of pantyhose being worn by all kinds of women women ranging from police women to teachers, to runway models.
